backlinks

Phew, this is a multi-faceted subject and I want to emphasise it’s not clear cut. But here is what I have learned in my research at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority – explained

The more authority your site has the better you will rank on Google. Authority means that searchers trust you and your content. The good news is that authorities trusted by humans are also trusted by Google. A great example is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of information and it’s a proven fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these domains to your site will contribute authority to your site. Another shining example is Wikipedia as the web pages here are almost always contributed to by tribes of humans as opposed to a single source.

So it follows that authority is largely influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative sites link to your web pages then you inherit their influence and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and hence the trust in your site by Google goes up.

How Google determines what is and isn’t authoritative is confidential for good reason and falls in line with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the web needs is an individual or a group manipulating the methods that Google employs in its efforts to try and regulate probably the most significant technological resource of our times.

Backlinking methods you should avoid

And on this thought it’s valuable to state some ‘black hat sources and practices of building backlinks that Google not only dislikes but appears to be moving aggressively to ‘classify’ as negative authorities. In no particular order of merit, the prime examples are:

Paid backlinks – web sites where people buy and sell backlinks

Comment spam – entries that have links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main theme.

Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or copied

Unnatural growth – there are a large selection of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t dumb. Any sudden increase in the amount of backlinks is going to show up on Google’s radar, especially if it’s a brand new domain.

Backlinks from bad reputation web pages – these are particularly destructive as you are guilty by association – need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on shakey ground, but key media portals seem to get a lot of authority and I have definitely found significant numbers of the same article over and over again on different portals with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as a percentage of the results I am seeing go against the normal behaviors I usually expect to see. More on this is in a future post….

When you hear the term “internet marketing“, what do you think of?

For many, that term conjures thoughts of websites or spamming or search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. For others, it’s all about graphical design, writing fancy code or even affiliate programs. All of those answers correct, but the essence of internet marketing is much simpler.

At its core, internet marketing is about these things:

* Understanding the target market to which the product/service/cause you’re marketing will appeal
* Determining exactly how your target market interacts with the internet
* Positioning your content on the internet to attract the attention of your target market
* Collecting information about your target market (also known as “leads”) for follow-up and conversion into sales
* Design of offers or incentives to induce the desired actions from your leads

Since there is insufficient space in this article to give all of these topics adequate attention, let’s focus on just one specific topic with the realm of internet marketing: Email Marketing.

My best payoff has always come by focusing on permission-based email marketing. Permission-based email marketing refers to the practice of collecting information (including email addresses) from website visitors and communicating with them via e-mail with their direct consent. The “permission” aspect of permission-based email marketing is what separates legitimate email marketers from the spammers that everyone despises.

My love of email marketing is strong for one reason: It works very well. Email marketing has been much like a never-ending goldmine: It enables us to produce income on demand simply by sending a good offer to our list. When you have thousands of loyal subscribers – as we do – and you put a strong and compatible offer in front of them, income becomes nearly automatic.

However, the key to successful email marketing is the development of a legitimate trust relationship with your subscribers. If you opt to send your subscribers a request for purchases every single day, they will likely tire of your badgering and cease reading your emails altogether.

Alternatively, if you take the time to provide good content to your readers on a regular and frequent basis, you’ll discover that your readers take all of your emails far more seriously, and as a result your emails will be opened, read and acted upon with greater frequency. Essentially, email marketing is really an exercise in trust.

While there are many more aspects to internet marketing than just permission-based email marketing, email has definitely been the cornerstone on which our business is built.

Running a social media campaign is a great way to get lots of visitors to a website but its very hard to target the campaign to a particular country. If your goal is to generate links, buzz or blog subscribers then worldwide traffic is fine but what happens if you are primarily interested in local visitors?

In the past most people have used Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon as the main networks to seed a viral article or blog post and this week I loaded up Google Trends to see which of these was biggest in the UK. As you can see below the daily traffic figures are nothing to get excited about and traffic to all of them seems to have dropped a lot in the UK during 2009.

However what is exciting is the chart below which includes Twitter data. Judging by these figures Twitter is the best place for doing a viral campaign to target UK users.

Of course Facebook is still by far the biggest site but it’s not really a link sharing site in the same way as Twitter & the other social media sites are.

London leads the way
According to The Telegraph London leads the way with social media and Digg is quoted as saying:

Nearly 10 per cent of traffic to news recommendation site Digg comes from London alone, making it the top city worldwide. A Digg spokesman said: “Nearly 10 per cent of traffic to Digg is from London and the UK is our second largest country next to the US.”

Apparently London is the largest city on Twitter too:

Last month, Evan Williams, Twitter’s chief executive and co founder, said that London is the service’s “top Twitter-using city”. Talking to BBC’s Newsnight, he said: “We have definitely noticed the UK has exploded for us recently… London is our top Twitter-using city.”

Whether this is testament to the way we use social media or the way all BT IP addresses seem to resolve to London remains to be seen.

Social bookmarking is a great method for [ranking well and direct traffic] both direct traffic and good rankings. The search engines know that the social bookmarking sites directly indicate what people are actually interested in. They know marketers use it and know that the majority of sites that have multiple social bookmarks are of interest to real people.

Social bookmarking is a great for information product marketing and getting traffic to your website.

You can use this trend and use social bookmarking to make your sites rank well.

Firstly, you need accounts on social bookmarking sites. Rather than social bookmark each site manually, look at software such as OnlyWire which semi-automates the process. This will make things a lot easier.

Once you have your account, find some marketers, friends or family who will also set up an account on Onlywire.

Then you basically swap bookmarks. They bookmark your site and you bookmark theirs in return.

Most marketers only have their sites bookmarked once, and very occasionally more than once. The search engines are probably very aware of this and so pay more attention to sites that have multiple bookmarks on a single site.

This straightforward method can easily get you multiple bookmarks and will give your sites a leg up in the search engines.

You can easily outsource social bookmarking your sites. It can become [costly] if you are creating a lot of sites. It will be easy for you to find people to do this at a reasonable price on any Internet marketing forum.

You can apply the same method to web sites such as Stumbleupon and Digg, both of which are potential sources of large amounts of traffic. These sites expect more newsworthy and interesting articles. It is possible get the thousands of visitors in a day with an interesting article.

It is possible for you to set up multiple social bookmarking accounts and bookmark your sites. However, these sites are smart and will realise what you are doing unless you hide behind proxies. It’s not worth the trouble to do this because it is so easy to network with other marketers.

Trading bookmarks with other marketers helps to build your network of contacts. In the future, these could turn in to profitable joint venture partners.

If you are creating information products then social bookmarking is a valuable tool.

Social bookmarking is a wonderful means for you to get traffic both from the search engines and from the social bookmarking sites. Do it well and you can benefit from great search engine rankings and massive traffic.

Google Secret Loophole can help you make a lot of money. Would you like to learn how to get free backlinks for your website? The ultimate goal of many website owners is to get to the first page of Google. Creating backlinks is one of the ways to ensure good rankings. However, some backlinks are not for free. A large number of free backlinks will then cause a higher Google page rank.

Directory and article submissions are some of the ways on how you can get almost unlimited number of backlinks.

Doing this can be quite time consuming but you have some options so you can achieve the same result.

1. You can turn to paid article and directory submission services, which will charge you a fee for each submission. If you do this, it isn’t really a free backlink.

The main issue with these websites is that the expense is usually monthly and may not be good in the long run if it doesn’t generate a good ROI. They take a good slice of your revenue. Moreover, you won’t have full control of the free backlinks you are receiving.

2. This leads us to the second option, and the best way -in my opinion- to get massive free backlinks while you control when and how the submissions are made: doing it yourself using an automated article and directory submission software.

These softwares are designed to automate the submission of your articles and your URL’s to thousands of directories in very few hours. Using these softwares will help you make a lot of backlinks and control the submissions.

You are probably thinking that it still entails investment. But if you think about it, the fees will not be recurring. On the other hand, once you have the softwares you can make unlimited submissions which means unlimited free backlinks for life for all your campaigns and projects .

There really is such thing as massive free backlinks, you just need the right tools to get them. Go on and catch the best software for automating the work so you can enjoy good search engine rankings.

Even though there are more sides to internet marketing than just email marketing (permission based), email has been the foundation that our business sits on.

Social bookmarking can be used for many reasons. My personal favorite is to use it for it abilities to have conversations, but if you have an online website, there is a lot more you can do with it. Each time you bookmark a webpage in your account you are given a link to your website which can ultimately provide higher ratings from Google, Yahoo and the like. Also users of the bookmark site may see your link, click it, and be sent directly to your site.

There are plenty of software packages available from online retailers that purport to have this functionality. It was always puzzling to me whether they worked as claimed giving you live links or were just a bunch of hype.

As any company trying to conduct business on the web is aware, search engine optimization and other sources of inbound traffic are getting harder to reliably attain. The idea of a software-based solution, then, would surely catch a good deal of interest.

There are so many steps to do this work by hand. First you have to sign up, then confirm the account by email, get the link, paste it in the correct field, type in your description and finally submit.

If you are planning to repeat this sequence manually on over 20 sites, you need to plan between 8-12 hours of work, depending on your typing speed.

Before I buy any of this software, I wanted some questions answered.

But will this software actually get rid of my problems, or will it cause more problems?

By what means, exactly, would it solve the problem?

Would the bookmarks be real and actually show up on the bookmark site?

Would approval be given for live activation with the links and comments attached?

There are so many questions running through my head and it is possible your head is swimming right now too.

The concept is interesting, sure, but it seems like it might increase unsolicited emails, comments, and other forms of drive-by advertisements. People were telling me about a software they were using in a particular way to be natural and avoid any look, hint or whiff of spam. Thus avoiding the Google slapdown.

Get Edwin Bryan’s bookmarking demon.

Now I didn’t know what to believe and was getting scared. Thankfully, after talking with many different people and sources the software had the features so everything looks natural and the accounts appeared to be regular live accounts that any human user would have set up.

Then I returned to being excited and a little worried about if this idea would work for me. Because of them achieving good results it bolstered my confidence though I questioned whether I had enough information to do it correctly the way they had applied the formula.

It turned out to be an excellent solution and I highly recommend Edwin Bryan’s Bookmarking Demon for your business.
